Choosing an e-commerce platform is one of the few website decisions that is hard to undo. Moving a live store later means migrating products, customers, orders and SEO. So it is worth getting right at the start. Here is how we think about the three platforms we build on most often.
Salla: built for the Saudi and Gulf market
Salla is a hosted platform designed around how people buy in Saudi Arabia: Arabic first, local payment methods, local shipping companies and a merchant dashboard in Arabic. You do not manage servers or updates.
- Best for: stores selling mainly inside Saudi Arabia and the Gulf that want to launch quickly
- Watch out for: less freedom in design and custom features than a self-hosted store; selling internationally is not its focus
Shopify: a global, hosted all-rounder
Shopify is reliable, fast and backed by a very large ecosystem of apps and themes. Hosting, security and checkout are handled for you, and it is strong for selling across several countries and currencies.
- Best for: brands selling internationally, or growing stores that want stability without technical upkeep
- Watch out for: monthly app subscriptions add up, transaction fees depend on your payment setup, and deep Arabic and right-to-left support needs a carefully chosen theme
WooCommerce: full control on WordPress
WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a store. You own everything — code, data and hosting — and almost anything can be customised or integrated.
- Best for: stores with unusual products or pricing, strong content and SEO needs, or integrations with existing systems
- Watch out for: you are responsible for hosting, updates, security and backups — budget for proper maintenance
Five questions that usually decide it
- Where are most of your customers — one country or many?
- Which payment and shipping methods must you offer on day one?
- How unusual are your products, options or pricing rules?
- Who will manage the store day to day, and in which language?
- Do you need to connect to an ERP, accounting or warehouse system?
Our short answer
Selling mainly in Saudi Arabia and want to launch fast? Start with Salla. Selling to several countries with a growing catalogue? Shopify. Need custom features, heavy content or integrations — or want to own everything? WooCommerce. Whatever you choose, the store still needs good product photos, clear descriptions, a fast mobile checkout and proper tracking before you spend on ads.
We have built stores on all three. If you are unsure which one fits, tell us about your products and we will recommend one honestly — even if it is the cheaper option.
